When the City of New Ulm celebrated its centennial year in 1954, the town had a nationwide reputation for music. “Oompah Town” and “Polka Capital of the Nation” were monikers attached to New Ulm because of the Old-time and Swing music bands that played for dances throughout the Midwest. New Ulm’s music history is made up of diverse musical genres including choral music, string orchestras, and wind bands. The New Ulm Turnverein has played an important role in support of music, having provided the social center of the community for nearly 170 years. Representing the New Ulm Municipal Band, New Ulm’s service band for nearly 80 years, Dan Groebner will share stories of places, events and people who have contributed to New Ulm’s rich musical heritage.
