“The 50-Year Mystery of the Edmund Fitzgerald” CAST Documentary Program
On the afternoon of November 9, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald embarked on her final voyage from Superior, Wisconsin, near Duluth, carrying a full cargo of taconite ore pellets with Captain Ernest M. McSorley in command. En route to a steel mill near Detroit, she was caught the next day in a severe storm with near-hurricane-force winds and waves up to 35 feet high. Sometime after 5:30 pm, the ship reported being in difficulty; at 7:10 pm, Captain McSorley sent his last message, "We are holding our own". Shortly after, the ship suddenly sank in Canadian (Ontario) waters 530 feet deep, about 17 miles from Whitefish Bay. Her crew of 29 perished, and no bodies were recovered. The exact cause of the sinking remains unknown. On the 50th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy, Discover Wisconsin presents a cinematic and deeply moving exploration of one of Lake Superior’s darkest nights. With high-definition footage and rare archival photos, this episode uncovers the story behind the Edmund Fitzgerald and its sister ship, the Arthur M. Anderson. Hear firsthand accounts from family descendants, meteorologists, and historians as they unravel the fierce November storm and the mysteries surrounding the ship’s sudden sinking.
