That’s right – the 40′ Upside-Down Christmas Tree is back! This year, the tree will make its home in German Park, adding even more sparkle to New Ulm’s holiday celebrations. Join us for the Official Tree Lighting Ceremony with Mayor Kathleen Backer at 5pm on Friday, November 28th. The tree lighting will wrap up our inaugural Weihnachts Markt - New Ulm Holiday Market (taking place from 12-5pm), and leaves time to gra a bite to eat, do a little shopping at our local stores, and find your spot for the 37th Annual Parade of Lights, which begins at 6pm!
As the holiday season arrives in New Ulm, the “Christmas City” proudly continues a spectacular tradition for its second year – a 40-foot upside-down Christmas tree on display for all to enjoy. Last year, this one-of-a-kind installation drew thousands of visitors from across the region (and even as far away as Japan!) and captured widespread media attention, including a feature in Forbes.
More than a festive display, the upside-down tree reflects New Ulm’s deep German heritage and the creative, community-driven spirit that sets our town apart. It stands as a celebration of collaboration, tradition, and holiday cheer – a symbol of what makes New Ulm such a special place to gather, explore, and experience the season. Special thanks goes out to Schaefer Companies, Kraus Tree Service, Paul's Electric/Hunt Electric, B&L Bar, and the New Ulm Public Utilities Commission for making this unique display possible. Each of these partners generously donates their time, equipment, and expertise at no cost – all for the enjoyment of spectators and the continued tradition of holiday magic in New Ulm.
Why is the Christmas Tree Upside Down?
A Nod to German Tradition in New Ulm, the “Christmas City”
Hanging a Christmas tree upside down may seem unusual today, but this display reflects an ancient European tradition with roots in Germany and early Christian history. One possible origin dates back to the 8th century, when Saint Boniface (ca. 675-754), an English Benedictine monk and missionary known as the Apostle of Germany, hung a fir tree upside down to represent the Holy Trinity. This act helped shift pagan worshipers from their veneration of an oak tree to embracing Christianity.
In later centuries, families in Central and Eastern Europe suspended their trees from ceilings to save space and better display their ornaments. This practice became a symbol of faith and festivity — and now, it’s a way for New Ulm to celebrate its heritage with a whimsical twist.
Our 40-foot upside-down tree fits perfectly in German Park, a place where the community gathers to celebrate traditions old and new. Embracing this old-world custom connects us to our roots while highlighting New Ulm’s well-earned reputation as the “Christmas City.” In addition to the upside-down tree, wander through German Park to see a variety of beautifully decorated trees on display from local businesses, organizations and families. Each tree brings its own style and holiday spirit, creating a magical forest of lights and creativity while the main tree stands tall (or upside-down!). Feel free to stroll through the display, admire the holiday scenes and thank the contributing groups — it’s all part of the “Christmas City” charm that makes New Ulm’s season so special.
While you’re here, we encourage you to also visit downtown New Ulm (1 block away), where the holiday spirit shines brightly. Stroll the streets lined with real Christmas trees, admire the lighted wreaths made from fresh garland adorning the downtown, and enjoy the festive storefronts decorated by local businesses.
This tree brings joy, conversation, and a reminder of the many ways Christmas has been celebrated throughout history. May it fill your season with wonder, connection, and holiday cheer. Happy Holidays from New Ulm!
