Nate Boots was born in Minneapolis and raised on the prairie in southwestern Minnesota. The oldest of six children, he first made a name for himself as a basketball player and then as a teenaged journalist for the Worthington Daily Globe. After travels—including an important half-year stay in Paris, France—he returned to Minnesota to study fiction writing, earning an MFA from MSU-Mankato. A published author of fiction, essays, poetry, and children’s books, he began to write and perform music in 2005. He co-founded the bands The Porchlights (alt-folk), Jim the Harpooner (Midwest sea chanty), and The High Horses (alt-folk/rock). He has played music across Minnesota, western Wisconsin, Iowa, and into the Dakotas, has released four albums of original music, and has been featured on KMSU radio’s “Keepin’ It Local” program, The Current’s Radio Heartland, and Minnesota Public Radio—where, on July 21, 2022, his song entitled “Bill Holm” was chosen as MPR’s Song of the Day.
