Minnesota's Hooded History - CAST Educational Program
When most people think of the Ku Klux Klan, dark images of Deep South hangmen come to mind. But Minnesota also has a Klan past, and for much of the 1920s it hid in plain sight in dozens of counties. Klan presence was unmistakable, particularly in southern Minnesota, where “konklaves” were hosted replete with parades, ballgames, even weddings. Three couples exchanged vows at the 1925 state meet at the Steele County Fairgrounds amid a backdrop of flaming crosses. Vaillancourt’s seven-year research challenge was to unearth the secrets of a secret society in Minnesota, for which newspapers gave scant account in the 1920s. Her own family’s oral history filled in some gaps. Her grandfather told her Klan members in Stockton near Winona used intimidation to keep him and other German immigrants from speaking in their native tongue, and both her grandfather and uncle saw Klan cross-burnings in the area. Join us for this fascinating presentation by Ms. Vaillancourt and learn about the little-known Klan activities and involvement throughout our area. This program is free and open to the public. No pre-registration needed. Provided by the CAST Senior Center, this programming was developed to reach a wide audience of senior citizens, providing a variety of interesting subjects via in-person presentations and experiences. Scheduled year-round, we host programs at the CAST Senior Center, but also travel to area libraries, museums, places of interest, and other Senior/Community Centers in our area to introduce Seniors to the many program opportunities that are available. Our programs are open to the public and there are no membership dues. Unless noted, the programs are provided free, and no preregistration is required. Carpooling is available for out-of-town trips. Check out our program schedule every month and join us for our next event. We look forward to seeing you!
