"Hurricane Helene's Deadly Warning" CAST Documentary Program
How Hurricane Helene became an ominous warning about America’s lack of preparedness. FRONTLINE and NPR draw on a decade of reporting on disasters and their aftermath to examine how and why the U.S. is more vulnerable than ever to climate change-related storms Hurricane Helene was a catastrophic Category 4 hurricane that struck the southeastern United States in September 2024, causing extensive damage and resulting in over 250 fatalities. In the aftermath of the storm, states of emergency were declared, and extensive recovery efforts were initiated. The National Hurricane Center released a final report detailing the storm's meteorological data and its devastating effects, highlighting the need for improved preparedness for future hurricanes. Hurricane Helene serves as a stark reminder of the increasing intensity and frequency of hurricanes, attributed in part to climate change, and underscores the importance of preparedness and response strategies in vulnerable regions.
