Who: All American Patriots & History Buffs
Come celebrate The Spirit of the American Doughboy during a special Rededication Program to honor and perpetuate the noble and valiant deeds of those who served in The Great War (WWI).
New Ulm is home to the only Spirit of the American Doughboy Statue in Minnesota. Originally cast in Chicago it was placed and dedicated 75 years ago on May 30, 1942.
Our Doughboy was deliberately destroyed by vandals in 1995. The New Ulm Veterans Organizations in partnership with local banks and our community responded with a capital campaign raising $42,000 to rebuild, replace, and rededicate just 8-months later in October.
The May 28th, 2017 program will include a special reading of the poem “In Flanders Fields,” a keynote address by New Ulm’s Mayor Robert Beussman, firing of Civil War Era Canons by the New Ulm Battery, a 21-gun rifle salute, Taps, and white dove release.
