CAST Movie Matinees "Harvey" (1950)
James Stewart portrays Elwood P. Dowd, an amiable fellow with a fondness for drink who travels everywhere with his best friend—a giant rabbit named Harvey. He seems oblivious to the fact that no one else can see his friend and continues to introduce him to new acquaintances and carry on in-depth conversations with him. After Elwood disrupts a party thrown by his matronly sister Veta (played by Josephine Hull), she arranges to have him treated at a psychiatric institution. Upon their arrival, however, Dr. Sanderson (Charles Drake) determines that the apoplectic Veta, rather than her brother, is the one in need of help and has her forcibly committed. After discovering the mistake, the director, Dr. Chumley (Cecil Kellaway), releases Veta and attempts to track down Elwood. As it turns out, though, Chumley is able to see Harvey, and Veta—who has confessed to having seen him as well—eventually decides that Elwood’s affable disposition compensates for his eccentricities. The CAST Senior Center is partnering with the New Ulm Public Library to bring you Movie Matinees for Seniors. Held in the Meeting Room in the lower level of the New Ulm Public Library, we will present a different movie each Friday afternoon at 1pm. These movies are free, and everyone is welcome to attend. No preregistration needed. Made possible by the Optimist Club of New Ulm. For 2024, our monthly movie theme is “Through the Decades”. We will be showing movies from the Top 100 Movies list of their decade, beginning with the 1930s in March and ending with the 2020s in December. See some old favorites and maybe discover some new ones. Join us for a fun afternoon of classic cinema!
