Brown County Teen Court Juror Training
Brown County Teen Court is a youth program that allows first-time (and select second-time) non-violent offenders an alternative to the traditional criminal justice system. The primary goal of Teen Court, which began in 1998, is to better enable young people to accept responsibility for their offense through active participation in an alternative court process. By assuming responsibility for his or her own actions, and through completion of conditions in Teen Court, the teen's offense will be dismissed. The type of cases heard in Teen Court may include minor consumption, possession of a small amount of drugs or drug paraphernalia, theft, shoplifting, and disorderly conduct. Brown County youth between the ages of 13-18 years participate as jurors. They are trained on the Teen Court process, including confidentiality, programs and procedures. There are currently over 70 jurors countywide, but because of graduating seniors, Teen Court is seeking new jurors.
