Wilhelm Pfaender - The Grand Old Man of New Ulm
Wilhelm Pfaender was one of the principal founders of New Ulm, and was a key figure in Minnesota and National politics. In addition to being the driver behind the Cincinnati Turners mission to find a safe town for German immigrants, he was a hero in the civil war, a State Representative, State Treasurer, and was an elector for Abraham Lincoln.
