The Johnstown Flood Virtual Program
Join us at the CAST Senior Center every Tuesday afternoon for our free virtual programs! Everyone is welcome to attend, and no preregistration is required. Presented by the Senior Learning Network. On Friday May 31, 1889, the South Fork Dam failed sending 20 million tons of water 14 miles down the Conemaugh Valley to Johnstown. The Johnstown Flood killed 2,209 people in one of the country’s worst disasters. This program explores the causes and effects including the history of the South Fork Dam, the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club who owned the dam in 1889, events on May 31, the large-scale recovery effort that followed.
