The Congdon Murder Trial - CAST Trip to St. Peter
With James Fleming, Chief Public Defender for the Fifth Judicial District and Second Judicial District, retired. Trip Details: We will meet in the CAST Senior Center parking lot at 10am and carpool to the St. Peter Senior Center (600 South 5th Street, St. Peter, MN 56082) This program is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required so we know how many will be attending. Register by calling 507-354-3212 (leave a message with your name, phone number, and if you’ll need to carpool). Program Overview: On June 27, 1977, Elisabeth Congdon, heir to the Congdon family fortune, was found brutally murdered along with her night nurse at the Glensheen Mansion in Duluth. The investigation would lead to the arrest of Elisabeth’s daughter, Marjorie Congdon Caldwell along with her second husband, Roger Caldwell. What would appear to be a strong circumstantial evidence case against both would result on the conviction of Roger but the acquittal of Marjorie in one of the most bizarre, yet most famous Minnesota criminal cases ever tried. This lecture will follow the investigations of both Roger and Margorie, their trials and head scratching outcome of each case. About CAST Educational Programs: Hosted by the CAST Senior Center, CAST Educational Programs were developed to reach a wide audience of senior citizens, providing a variety of interesting subjects via in-person presentations and experiences. Scheduled year-round, we host programs at the CAST Senior Center, but also travel to area libraries, museums, places of interest, and other Senior/Community Centers in our area to introduce Seniors to the many program opportunities that are available. Our programs are open to the public and there are no membership dues. Unless noted, the programs are provided free and no preregistration is required. Carpooling is available for out-of-town trips. Check out our program schedule every month and join us for our next event. We look forward to seeing you!
