The Battle at Birch Coulee
This program is sponsored by the Junior Pioneers of New Ulm & Vicinity.
The battle at Birch Coulee was not a planned event by either side. After many of the survivors at Fort Ridgely pushed Sibley to send out burial parties, he finally relented. August 31, 1862, he sent out about 120 men, to bury, to look for those left behind and to be on the lookout for the Dakota. Most of those bodies had laid in the August heat for nearly two weeks.
