Race on Trial: 1925 Murder Trial of Ossian Sweet - CAST Trip to St. Peter
With James Fleming, Chief Public Defender for the Fifth Judicial District and Second Judicial District, retired. Trip Details: We will meet in the CAST Senior Center parling lot at 10am and carpool to the St. Peter Senior Center (600 South 5th Street, Saint Peter, MN 56082) This program is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required so we know how many will be attending. Register by calling 507-354-3212 (leave a message with your name, phone number, and if you’ll need to carpool). Program Overview: In 1925 an African American physician and his brother were tried for murder. Ossian Sweet bought a house in an all-white neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. A white man was killed after a white mob attacked the Sweets in their home. This trial of an African American by an all-white jury charged with killing a white man was defended by Clarence Darrow. This case highlights the importance of a fair trial in the justice system and how race plays a role in that process. Educational Programs Hosted by the CAST Senior Center, CAST Educational Programs were developed to reach a wide audience of senior citizens, providing a variety of interesting subjects via in-person presentations and experiences. Scheduled year-round, we host programs at the CAST Senior Center, but also travel to area libraries, museums, places of interest, and other Senior/Community Centers in our area to introduce Seniors to the many program opportunities that are available. Our programs are open to the public and there are no membership dues. Unless noted, the programs are provided free and no preregistration is required. Carpooling is available for out-of-town trips. Check out our program schedule every month and join us for our next event. We look forward to seeing you!
