Book Release & Author Talk/Signing: A Place Called Home
This program is sponsored by the Junior Pioneers of New Ulm & Vicinity.
Presented by Nancy Noyes Silcox. A Place Called Home is the story of young Carolina Beck and her family who are driven from Cincinnati, Ohio, by rising hostilities toward immigrants. They travel by steamboat to New Ulm, Minnesota, in 1857. Searching for economic security and the freedom to follow their German customs and traditions, they face unexpected challenges learning to survive in a new town on the Minnesota frontier. Constructing a house, securing food, building a community and defending their town during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 test their courage, persistence and resilience in this coming-of-age story. A Place Called Home is historical fiction based on memoirs, personal accounts and historical research.
About the Author:
Nancy Noyes Silcox, grew up in New Ulm, Minnesota, where she learned to appreciate its German history and culture. As a fifth-generation descendant of Swedish, Norwegian, and English settlers in Minnesota, she was curious about people who left everything familiar in the “old country,” took a risk and headed to Minnesota. She also wanted to know about the Dakota people who shared Minnesota history with the settlers, but experienced it differently.
In her career as a librarian, she worked as a children’s specialist in public libraries in Arlington, Virginia, and as a school librarian in public schools in Alexandria, Virginia, and in international schools in Egypt, Belgium and Ukraine. Although she’s lived in many places around the world, Minnesota has always been home. Currently, she lives in Northfield with her husband, Steve, and a Burmese cat named SuuKyi.
