DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 2\, from 10 am to noon\, the Brown County Historical Society is hosting Mammoths\, Mastodons\, and More! Last year\, in 2022\, M. R. Paving & Excavating donated a partial mammoth tusk and hipbone fragment to our museum's collection. The remains came from a Columbian mammoth\, a species that lived throughout North America and went extinct at the end of the last ice age. Since then\, Joyce Dauer donated a partial hipbone from an American mastodon\, found in the same gravel pit in New Ulm as the mammoth remains.\n\n\n\nIn celebration of these discoveries\, the BCHS is holding a family friendly program from 10 am to noon on December 2. The program will include children's activities and will feature a table of fossils presented by staff from the Science Museum of Minnesota. At 12:00 pm\, there will be a presentation by the Science Museum staff in our Annex building at 12 North Broadway Street.\n\nBoth remains are now shown in the Brown County Museum in a new display case.\n\n\n\nWe recently had the tusk radiocarbon dated to determine its age and are holding a guessing contest from now until December 2. Whoever guesses the age closest to the radiocarbon date will receive a small prize.
