Jul 9 Car Hop & Shop
Introducing a new event: Car Hop & Shop, a Cruise-In in Historic Downtown New Ulm!  Bring your car and showcase it on Minnesota Street in New Ulm's Historic Downtown.  Check out the cars!  Shop the unique stores! Grab a bite to eat at our great restaurants or bars! All Classic makes and models welcome!  5pm-8pm.

2015 Car Hop & Shop dates: July 9, Aug 6 & Sept 10.

Location:
This informal Classic Car Show will be along the East side of North Minnesota Street beginning at Center and Minnesota (by Ashlee’s Bridal, across from the Chamber), to 4th North and Minnesota. This side of the street will be blocked off and signed for participants. A Public Right-of-Way Use Application has been approved by the City for this event. If needed,  overflow Cruise-In parking will be in the City parking lot between 1st and 2nd North on Broadway, and available after 5:00 PM only. The West side of Minnesota Street will remain open for your customers to conveniently park.

Participation:
A Cruise-In informal car show is an excellent way to bring visitors and local residents into New Ulm’s Downtown for shopping, dining, and entertainment, which is the idea behind having this event.  For the Car Hop & Shop, the Chamber is encouraging all Downtown stores and restaurants to remain open until at least 8:00 PM on Thursday, July 9th.  As Professional Service Providers in Downtown, we understand you may not benefit from extending your hours, but we welcome you to do so if you wish. If you choose to remain open until 8:00, we encourage you to advertise to inform potential clients.

Contact: If you need additional information or have questions, please contact me, Cara Knauf, at the Chamber at 507-233-4308 or cara@newulm.com.

Jul 10 Ian Kimmel at the Grand Kabaret!

Self-accompanied on whichever instrument he chooses at the time, Ian’s leads (he sings all the parts, too) come naturally. They’re powerful, and, refreshingly, not the least bit self-conscious. Watching, listening to him; He can sing every note he feels, and feel every note he sings.

While not in the least shunning covers of great music already out there, Ian decidedly revels in creating originals. To wit; his forthcoming solo album, “Nothing to Say, Nothing to Tell,” slated for 2015 release, introduces all Ian Kimmel originals. Sooner rather than later, it’s safe to predict Ian Kimmel originals, if not already, will be being covered.

Finally (only for the time being), keep all eyes on your radar screens. Ian Kimmel’s signature is already there. In that world where there’s little room at the top, where few are chosen; Ian Kimmel’s eyes are on the front door, and he’s on the move.

Jul 12 Adam & I at Lola's

Adam & I are Adam & Andrea Melia, a compellingly fresh young duo from Nashville, TN. Capturing the unique energy of current americana styles, while giving a joyful nod to the sounds of the 50’s and 60’s, Adam & I make a music all their own. The duo formed in 2011 and started releasing music for free via NoiseTrade. In Fall of 2013, Adam & I recorded their first full-length album - Adam & I - which released on February 11, 2014. John Apice of No Depression called the self-titled album a “simple, stripped down old-fashioned inspired folk journey brought up to date -- superbly and with discreet panache.” The album features singles We Have LoveIf I’m Taken, and Honey I’ll Take the Fall for Loving YouNo Country for New Nashville's Kurtis Dickerson reviewed We Have Love as “a prime example of the light delight that comes from the trust in one’s companion in the face of despair” and described their live performance as “reminiscent of the playful banter and clever song-weaving of The Civil Wars.”  American Songwriter exclusively premiered the music video for If I’m Taken in July 2014, with Music News Nashville calling the track “emotionally powerful.” Adam & I's new EP is called Meanwhile in Virginia, released July 10th, 2015. Discover and enjoy their music at www.adamandimakemusic.com.

Jul 14 Alice Lind Play Reading Society

July 14: Noises Off by Michael Frayn

Plays are selected with the criteria that they are great pieces of literature and contain universal truths and/or significant themes. Many of the selections have won Tony Awards or Pulitzer prizes for literature. Suggestions are always welcome for the following season.

Volunteers will be asked to read parts throughout the evening. Depending on attendance, the leading roles may be read by several people for each act or scene. Persons attending do not have to read or may request smaller roles to read. Suggestions from the public for future plays are strongly encouraged. Contact Paul Warshauer at (507) 359-9990.

The Society meets on the Second Tuesday of each month and is dedicated to the idea that reading and listening to plays allows the participants to understand the words and themes of the author more clearly than in some performances. The series is named after the former Governor’s wife, Alice Lind, a supporter of social causes and literacy.  To make reservations, please leave a name and phone number on the voice mail at the NUACT office phone (507) 359-9990 along with how many will be in your party.  For more information about the play reading options contact Paul Warshauer (507) 359-9990. For more information about the Lind House, please contact Trudy Beranek at (507) 354-8802.  If you would like to be on the monthly mailing list, please email us at execdir@newulmact.com

Jul 25 Captain Gravitone & The String Theory Orchestra Performs at the Grand Kabaret!
Captain Gravitone & the String Theory Orchestra plays Americana Folk Rock, infused with Tango and Jazz, one of the many great, new bands coming from Minnesota. The group's superhero, Captain Gravitone, tangos in big box stores, beautiful women clad in leather, beat poets, elephants, philosophy majors, the circus and parallel universes come to life in the group's compositions. The sound is fun, sometimes moody, with a distinct sense of humor reminiscent of Tom Waits, Frank Zappa and Bela Fleck. The group features Eli Hoehn on banjo, Wayne Schmidt on the electric guitar, Corban Noah on electric bass, Damen Price on drums and a host of other musicians that lend their talents to the group on an occasional basis including vocalist Kelly Quinn, violinist Karen Kozak, guitarist/vocalist Mark Bishofsky, guitarist/vocalist Jason Helder, percussionist Daryn Christensen, and bassist Bill Grenke.

Jul 31 The Dan Duffy Orchestra
The Dan Duffy Orchestra is an exciting new group from Mankato, Minnesota performing swing and Hot Club music from the 20’s on up to today. A large part of their repertoire consists of original tunes which blend in nicely with their style. The group consists of Paul Horrisberger on acoustic bass who has an extensive history playing bluegrass with Dick Kimmel and others. Fiddle player Marti Ryan teaches at MSU and in her busy schedule performs with the Mankato Symphony. On tenor and soprano saxophone is Frank Cesario who for many years has worked with Big Band jazz groups. Hanna Cesario who plays ukulele is super-talented young jazz singer. Dan Edw. Duffy has been playing blues and rock since the 60’s with groups like City Mouse, Mary Jane Alm and Mankato’s own Gestures of “Run, Run, Run” fame. The melding of all these styles and influences creates an exciting and fun listening and dancing experience.
