May 1 Dick Kimmel and Jerilyn Kjelberg Perform at the Grand Kabaert!

Kimmel is a familiar name in the Minnesota acoustic music scene. Dick Kimmel has played bluegrass music for decades earning him a 2010 induction into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame and a 2008 induction into America’s Old-Time Music and Bluegrass Hall of Fame. In this band configuration, Dick joins with vocalist extraordinaire and long-time Kimmel music partner, Jerilyn Kjellberg, for an exquisite program of traditional acoustic music. As a duo and part of the bluegrass band, Dick Kimmel & Co, Dick and Jerilyn have performed together for more than a decade.

Dick Kimmel with Jerilyn Kjellberg perform traditional bluegrass and folksongs, as well as old-time stringband, and bluegrass gospel music. Jerilyn Kjellberg is featured on guitar and vocals. Dick Kimmel plays mandolin, banjo, guitar and sings. They weave their voices and instrumentation into a blend that is at times poignant, at times exhilarating, and always compelling.

May 2 The Tom Lieberman Trio Performs at the Grand Kabaret!

Those of you with good memories may remember Tom Lieberman as the tallest member of the seminal vocal jazz trio Rio Nido... Those of you who are fans of A Prairie Home Companion may remember him as a guitarist, singer, & the voice of El Muchacho Allegre (Happy Boy) Ajua-brand Hot Sauce... Those of you who have (or are) children, may have heard his original songs being sung on Sesame Street.... And, those of you who enjoy movies may have heard Tom's original songs on the soundtrack to the breakout independent film, Sweet Land.

In recent years, Tom has returned to the performance stage as a solo and collaborative musical artist, and the creator of Ukulele Alley, starring everyone’s favorite talking ukulele, Luke the Uke. His 2013 recording of original songs, Common Denominator, has received enthusiastic reviews from listeners, press and broadcasters worldwide, with the The Minneapolis StarTribune placing it on their list of the year’s Top 10 recordings, and reviewers describing it as, “gentle, romantic, playful & infectious…” and “…bluesy, simmering, profoundly philosophical…”

Tom will be bringing his trio (Bill Grenke on upright and Bruce Wintervold on drums & vibraphone) to the Grand Kabaret for an evening of originals, chestnuts and roots, served right.

May 12 Alice Lind Play Reading Society
May 12: School for Scandal by Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Plays are selected with the criteria that they are great pieces of literature and contain universal truths and/or significant themes. Many of the selections have won Tony Awards or Pulitzer prizes for literature. Suggestions are always welcome for the following season.

Volunteers will be asked to read parts throughout the evening. Depending on attendance, the leading roles may be read by several people for each act or scene. Persons attending do not have to read or may request smaller roles to read. Suggestions from the public for future plays are strongly encouraged. Contact Paul Warshauer at (507) 359-9990.

The Society meets on the Second Tuesday of each month and is dedicated to the idea that reading and listening to plays allows the participants to understand the words and themes of the author more clearly than in some performances. The series is named after the former Governor’s wife, Alice Lind, a supporter of social causes and literacy.  To make reservations, please leave a name and phone number on the voice mail at the NUACT office phone (507) 359-9990 along with how many will be in your party.  For more information about the play reading options contact Paul Warshauer (507) 359-9990. For more information about the Lind House, please contact Trudy Beranek at (507) 354-8802.  If you would like to be on the monthly mailing list, please email us at execdir@newulmact.com

May 16 Captain Gravitone & The String Theory Orchestra Performs at the Grand Kabaret!
Captain Gravitone & the String Theory Orchestra plays Americana Folk Rock, infused with Tango and Jazz. Motifs found in the groups compositions include the group's superhero, Captain Gravitone, tangos in big box stores, leather clad women, beat poets, the circus, philosophy majors and parallel universes. The sound is fun, thought provoking, sometimes moody, with a sense of humor reminiscent of Tom Waits, Frank Zappa and Bela Fleck. The Gravitone sound is plump with instrumental jams and moving vocals, navigating between Irish drinking songs, Jazz ballads, and catchy Rock tunes. The Mankato-based group features Eli Hoehn on banjo and vocals, Wayne Schmidt and Jason Helder on guitars and vocals, Damen Price on drums, and vocalist Kelly Kroeker. The group is the resident house-band for the Cabaret Le Ruse theatre group and has performed with some of Minnesota's finest musicians including Papa John Kolstad, Tom Lieberman, Steve Kaul, Bill Grenke, Scott Fultz, Ron Arsenault, Dave Pengra, Wendy Soleil, and Karen Kozak, among many others. The group is currently working on a full length cd to be released sometime in 2015.

May 30 The Skally Line Performs at the Grand Kabaret!
The Skally Line duet plays hot oldtime country, fiddle tunes, blues, and ballads.  Along with a raucous collection of standards and a bunch of rare old cuts rarely heard live, The Skally Line specializes in creating a Minnesota old time tradition that never quite developed on its own.  Tom Cornish and Fred Keller–both long time vets of Minnesota’s roots community–both write songs celebrating the stories of Minnesota old and new.  Fred plays mandolins, Tom guitar and fiddle.  Together they work up tight harmonies and arrangements, some tasty picking, and a whole lot of fun from the Deep North.
