Mar 7 Urban Hillbilly Quartet
It started as a jam session in 1995 in a now burnt-out St. Paul hole-in-the-wall bar. Over 18 years later, the Urban Hillbilly Quartet has grown into an award-winning Twin Cities-based ensemble that delivers an eclectic mix of musical styles, blending electric guitar, piano, accordion, bass and drums. On stage, the Hillbillies perform mainly original material--most of which can be found on their eight albums—especially their latest: 2008’s Bring in the Sails. Their music has been influenced by: Midwest powerhouses The Jayhawks and Uncle Tupelo; UK’s Grand Drive; Canada’s Bruce Cockburn; and folk/jazz star David Grisman. UHQ has been compared to R.E.M., The Grateful Dead and The Waterboys. The core of the band is Erik Brandt (guitar, accordion, piano, lead vocals), Jeremy Szopinski (electric guitar), Dave Strahan (electric guitar, banjo, vocals), Mike Schultz (bass) and Jim Orvis (drums) who have been performing together in the UHQ all over the United States and overseas.

Mar 10 Alice Lind Play Reading Society
March 10: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams

Plays are selected with the criteria that they are great pieces of literature and contain universal truths and/or significant themes. Many of the selections have won Tony Awards or Pulitzer prizes for literature. Suggestions are always welcome for the following season.

Volunteers will be asked to read parts throughout the evening. Depending on attendance, the leading roles may be read by several people for each act or scene. Persons attending do not have to read or may request smaller roles to read. Suggestions from the public for future plays are strongly encouraged. Contact Paul Warshauer at (507) 359-9990.

The Society meets on the Second Tuesday of each month and is dedicated to the idea that reading and listening to plays allows the participants to understand the words and themes of the author more clearly than in some performances. The series is named after the former Governor’s wife, Alice Lind, a supporter of social causes and literacy.  To make reservations, please leave a name and phone number on the voice mail at the NUACT office phone (507) 359-9990 along with how many will be in your party.  For more information about the play reading options contact Paul Warshauer (507) 359-9990. For more information about the Lind House, please contact Trudy Beranek at (507) 354-8802.  If you would like to be on the monthly mailing list, please email us at execdir@newulmact.com

Mar 14 Coffee Party with Rep. Torkelson
NEW ULM - Arts folks from the New Ulm area and District 16 are invited to a Coffee Party with State Representative Paul Torkelson on Saturday, March 14 at 10 am at the Schell's Room, New Ulm Holiday Inn, 2101 South Broadway Street. The meeting will share the successes of our local artists and let Representative Torkelson know the powerful impact arts funding has on our community. Provided will be a list of the wonderful arts activities that have happened with funding from the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, through the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund, and grants from Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council (PLRAC). All members of the community are welcome to attend, share their story and to advocate for the continued funding for the arts. The Arts & Cultural Heritage fund was created from the Legacy Amendment. It provides funding to the Minnesota State Arts Board and the eleven Regional Arts Councils in the state. Arts organizations and arts activities in our area may not exist without these grant monies. Representative Torkelson has served on the Minnesota House Legacy Funding Committee since its inception. This committee decides how the funds are distributed and what percentage goes to the MN State Arts Board and regional arts councils. The Coffee Party meeting is sponsored by Minnesota Citizens for the Arts and the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council and is hosted by the Irish Cultural Society of New Ulm. RSVP is preferred but not necessary. Please contact Brenda, Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council at 507-833-8721 or plrac@hickorytech.net. Coffee and rolls will be served.

Mar 14 Bass Brand Brass Band @ The Grand Kabaret, Saturday, March 14 @ 7:30PM
Currently they consist of 7-8 players; 2-3 trumpets, 2 trombones, saxophone, sousaphone, and drums. The BBBB originally formed in 2004 as a group of college and community musicians interested in playing New Orleans style brass band music (e.g. the Dirty Dozen Brass Band). Gradually, the group began turning to more jazz, pop, and eclectic choices inspired by other bands (Youngblood Brass Band, Jack Brass Band, Mama Digdown's Brass Band, the Seatbelts, Pietasters, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and many others). The group played for many different events including college performances, festivals, recitals, private events, parades, as school guest artists, and others. The group took a brief hiatus from playing as members graduated college. Now the group has reformed with old and new members because the music is just that much fun to play. Come check them out!

Mar 17 St. Patrick's Parade 50th Anniversary
New Ulm Gets Its Green On! The smell of corned beef and soda bread is in the air and that can only mean one thing. It's time to gear up for the New Ulm St. Patrick's Day Parade. The parade will take place on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 and will step off at 5 pm. This is the 50th Anniversary Year of the Parade, making it the longest consecutive Irish parade event in the state. As tradition mandates, the parade route will begin at 3rd South and Minnesota Streets and proceed the wrong way up Minnesota to its conclusion at the Glockenspiel. This year, the St. Patrick's Day Parade Chieftans have bestowed the honor of Grand Marshal on Pat Kearney and crowned his daughter Emma as the Irish Eyes Smiling Queen Princess. If you have a group interested in being a part of this great St. Patrick's Day tradition or for additional information, please visit our website www.newulmblarney.com or contact the parade chieftans at nublarney@gmail.com. The event was first organized by three local Irish attorneys,Bill O Connor, Tom Donnelly and Terry Dempsey, with the goal to foster the understanding of Irish culture and celebrate its heritage and family values thereby contributing to the good and welfare of the residents in the city of New Ulm and the surrounding area. A grateful thanks to the Gislason Law Firm, New Ulm Area Foundation, New Ulm Chamber & Visitors Bureau for their contributions to this event.

New Ulm Public Library will be host to several upcoming River Ranger programs. Though the focus is on youth involvement, adults are encouraged to participate. On Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m., Master Naturalist John Knisley will present "All About Native Bees." On Tuesday, March 24 at 6 p.m., local wildlife photographer and historian Ron Bolduan and DNR Naturalist Scott Kudelka will present "River Valley Critters & Minneopa Bison." Bolduan will share wildlife photos and hands-on artifacts and include segments of the popular "Camo Critter Hunt" and track identification photos. Kudelka will discuss the re-introduction of bison into Minneopa State Park in fall 2015. Mar 20 The Atlantis Quartet Performs at the Grand

Atlantis Quartet has emerged as a leading voice in the twin cities' jazz scene since its inception in 2006. The group features four of Minnesota's most exciting jazz composers and improvisors with saxophonist Brandon Wozniak, guitarist Zacc Harris, bassist Chris Bates, and drummer Pete Hennig. Named Best Jazz Artist in 2011 by the City Pages and 2012 by the Star Tribune, Atlantis Quartet's blend of complexity and accessibility in its compositions has proven a perfect fit for all listeners. The group has released four albums to critical acclaim and toured the US, and recently headlined the opening night of the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. JazzTimes Magazine states that the band "shifts nimbly from a punk-jazz aesthetic to an ECM-ish sensitivity. Startlingly original stuff..." while City Pages says "This is a band with a limitless future."
