Oct 3 WINEDOWN for the WEEKEND! - at Morgan Creek Vineyards
WINEDOWN FOR THE WEEKEND AT MORGAN CREEK VINEYARDS
Live Classical and Jazz Piano performances by Ben Marti, Morgan Creek Vineyards' Artist-in-Residence.  Enjoy live music with European style hospitality, wine by the bottle or glass and gourmet wine appetizers from our wood fired oven.
No reservations. First come first seated.

Classically trained pianist, Ben Marti is a native of New Ulm, MN, currently living in Mankato, MN.  Marti has been working at Gustavus Adolphus College, Saint Peter, MN, since 2004 as a professional accompanist assisting in instrumental and vocal studio rehearsal and recital performance for Gustavus students and faculty, music department seminars, and theatre department musicals. He has worked as Loyola High School Musical and choir accompanist since 2007, and serves a number of local schools with accompaniment services.

Ben has performed with the Mankato Symphony under the direction of Ken Freed and performed as a visiting member of the Andy Stein Jazz Band.  He has donned renaissance costume to perform as Young Wolfgangprogram for youth sponsored by the Mankato Symphony. He has performed with the Symphony since 2006.

Marti also performs with several popular regional Jazz bands and manages the ?Ben Marti Jazz Trio.? He was a founding member, lead singer, and accordionist of the group ?Pre-Apocalyptic Junkyard Orchestra? a wildly popular local group, touring and performing an extensive variety of music venues including jazz, gypsy, ethnic, folk, and classic rock.

Ben left New Ulm during his high school years and continued his academics at the Waldkirchen Gymnasium, and piano studies in Jandelsbrunn, Germany. He returned to the U.S. completing his high school career as an honors graduate in 1999 from the Perpich Center for the Arts, Golden Valley, MN.

Marti was accepted as a Jussi Bjorling Music Scholarship recipient at Gustavus Adolphus College, an award he earned  from 1999 to 2003. He was a student of Gustavus Professor, Helen Baumgartner.  During his Bachelor of Arts program he entered the International Exchange Student program in Vienna, Austria, where he studied music and piano for two semesters.

Marti has had several professional recording experiences as accompanist for Ben Westphal - boy soprano, and the McKnight Foundation Grant. Ben is a recent recipient of the ?Emerging Artist? McKnight Grant Awarded by the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council. As recipient of the 2012 ?Emerging Artist? grant, Ben performed, in a public concert, the works of Bach, Hindemith, and Chopin. The Emerging Artist performance served as the occasion for the release of Marti?s first classical CD. The professional recording was done as a part of the project requirements of the McKnight grant.

Marti is a avid collaborator with regional artists, performers, and  poets - participating annually in the Cambria Eisteddfod, as musical director for the Welsh Heritage event sponsored by the Blue Earth County Historical Society,  and Morgan Creek Vineyards.  He currently performs seasonally as Artist-in- Residence at Morgan Creek Vineyards as classical, jazz, and tango pianist, and accompanist for the  Opera ala Carte series - the winery?s monthly street opera performances.

In his leisure time, Ben has become an avid bicyclist - a passion which he acquired while living in Germany and Austria.  He has worked at his family?s winery business as assistant wine-maker, vineyard manager, and has lead the annual harvest crush for the past 9 years.

Oct 3 Bob Bovee and Pop Wagner Perform at The Grand Kabaret!

Bob Bovee and Pop Wagner Perform at The Grand Kabaret Friday, October 3rd @ 8 PM!

Bob is a Nebraska native whose family sang and played the old-time songs. Many of the western and railroad songs he does were learned from his grandmother and uncle Herman. He can drive a dance band with his guitar and harmonica and plays banjo and autoharp, sings and yodels. Bob is well known and loved for his dry and witty stage humor.

Pop has quite the reputation as a singer, picker, fiddler, lasso twirler, poet and downright funny guy. He appeared quite frequently on Public Radio's A Prairie Home Companion during the show's formative years and for the last four decades he has worked his cowboy magic throughout 44 states and 10 countries in schools, colleges, folk clubs, festivals, rodeos, picnics, concert halls, and on radio and television and in the movies .... well, all right, one movie! He has a dozen recordings to his credit as well as two guitar instructional books and two videos.

Bob and Pop’s cowboy anthems crackle with the warmth of a prairie campfire and their old time fiddle tunes set toes a-tappin' while serving up spellbinding rope tricks and tall stories -- all with a good dose of friendly humor.

Hermann The German...The Scandal that Rocked New Ulm
Political malfeasance is commonplace in the big city, but what happens when scandal strikes in the heart of small town America? New Ulm is searching for ways to increase tourism and a 4 foot tall footprint cast of town mascot Hermann the German might be just the thing to do it. Where did this mysterious artifact come from? Why are it's origins shrouded in secrecy? A hard-nosed journalist is on the verge of cracking the story wide open and exposing a cover-up that could shake the town to it's very core. Based on the true story of a big footprint and a little white lie that spun out of control.

Showtimes at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm

Oct 10 WINEDOWN for the WEEKEND!

Oct 10 Andriana Lehr Performs at The Grand Kabaret!

Friday, October 10th @ 8 PM Andriana Lehr Performs at The Grand Kabaret!

Saint Paul based singer/songwriter Andriana Lehr has been playing locally, albeit sparingly for the last 8 years. Lehr relocated to the Twin Cities from South Dakota in 2004 to study voice at the University of Minnesota School of Music. A self-proclaimed “opera school drop-out,” she has spent subsequent years working, learning, and soul-searching only to come back around to pursuing music as a primary vocation. After spending much of 2013 focusing solely on music, Lehr’s musicianship and vocal prowess have blossomed, and her live performances are filled with grit, honesty, and an impressive, informed vocal range and sensitivity.

After 3 years in the making, Lehr released her debut album, “Try to be True” in October of 2013. A learning process all of its own, the record showcases gems such as “Lost the Map,” “Wish You Well,” and title track, “Try to be True.”

Aside from her solo project, Lehr also plays keys with local power-pop band, The Usual Things, and has formed an eclectic jazz duo (a. joy) with local guitarist, Robert Bell.

Oct 17 WINEDOWN for the WEEKEND!

Oct 21 Minnesota Valley Civil War Round Table
Independent historian Bryce Stenzel will discuss the Battle of Nashville at the Minnesota Valley Civil War Round Table program Tuesday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. at New Ulm Public Library. The December 15-16, 1864, Battle of Nashville was one of the most decisive but underrated campaigns of the entire American Civil War. It resulted in the utter destruction of the Confederacy?s Army of the Tennessee, under the command of General John Bell Hood. Six of Minnesota?s 11 infantry regiments were stationed in and around Nashville just before or during the battle. Several soldiers with ties to the Mankato area and who are immortalized on the Boy in Blue Soldiers Monument took part in the battle, including Lorin Cray of the Ninth Minnesota and Colonel James Baker of the Tenth Minnesota. Stenzel is the great-great grandson of Wilhelm Urban, a Fifth Minnesota regimental soldier who fought at Nashville. This event is made possible by a grant provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative and was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Oct 23 Tour of Manufacturing

New Ulm Tours of Manufacturing

Did you know that many manufacturing programs in Minnesota colleges have nearly 100% job placement right now? That’s because modern American manufacturing jobs are so high-tech and innovative that companies are having trouble finding enough qualified employees. Mark your calendars to learn more about what advanced manufacturing is all about through public tours of two New Ulm manufacturers, Windings and SpecSys, on October 23rd.  Windings, at 208 N. Valley, will be offering tours from 12-6pm.  Tours of SpecSys, located at 2120 N. Broadway, will be from 3-6.

These tours coincide with Minnesota Manufacturer’s Week, and are in conjunction with the 2014 Statewide Tour of Manufacturing, which is taking place from October 23-25.  More information on the statewide tours are available at www.dreamitdoitmn.com.  New Ulm tours, which are a part of the Tours of Manufacturing of South Central Minnesota, were coordinated by the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce.

The public and the community are encouraged to attend these tours.  No RSVP is necessary.  For more information, contact the New Ulm Area Chamber at 507-233-4300, chamber@newulm.com, or www.newulm.com.

Oct 24 Atlantis Quartet Returns to The Grand Kabaret!

Atlantis Quartet Returns to The Grand Kabaret Friday, October 24th @ 8 PM!

Atlantis Quartet has emerged as a leading voice in the twin cities' jazz scene since its inception in 2006. The group features four of Minnesota's most exciting jazz composers and improvisors with saxophonist Brandon Wozniak, guitarist Zacc Harris, bassist Chris Bates, and drummer Pete Hennig. Named Best Jazz Artist in 2011 by the City Pages and 2012 by the Star Tribune, Atlantis Quartet's blend of complexity and accessibility in its compositions has proven a perfect fit for all listeners. The group has released four albums to critical acclaim and toured the US, and recently headlined the opening night of the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. JazzTimes Magazine states that the band "shifts nimbly from a punk-jazz aesthetic to an ECM-ish sensitivity. Startlingly original stuff..." while City Pages says "This is a band with a limitless future."

Oct 29 Paddy O'Brien Irish Music Concert, CASTLE Lifelong Learning
The CASTLE class, Exploring Irish Traditional Music ends with a final concert open to the public, on October 29 at 4:30 pm, hosted at  The Grand Kabaret, 210 N Minnesota Street.  This class will give valuable insight into the essence of Irish music & song and how to recognize instrumentation, and melodic structures within stylistic interpretations and embellishments.  Paddy O’Brien and Erin Hart will talk about the legacy of legendary musicians and singers, some of whom they  learned from firsthand. They will discuss some brilliant individualists, such as fiddlers Tommy Potts and Paddy Fahey. Increasing commercial influences in Irish music have tended to emphasize speed and technical ability at the expense of expressive feeling, phrasing, and melodic creativity. Paddy and Erin will teach some traditional melodies and songs, and suggest some alternative sources to commercial recordings for learning about Irish traditional music.   This course is funded, in part, by the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council with an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State’s general fund.
