May 4 Walk/Bike to School Day
Join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day! Students from Jefferson Elementary, Washington Elementary, St. Paul Elementary and St. Anthony Elementary are invited to walk to school along with parents, teachers and community leaders in a 'Walking School Bus.' There will be not be any organized groups for biking, but we highly encourage students (and their parents) to bike to school on their own. Instead of driving students all the way to school, parents can drop off students and register them to walk at four designated locations in New Ulm. From each location, at least two adult volunteer 'Walking School Bus drivers' will walk with students to each New Ulm school in the morning. After school, the volunteers will walk with the students back to each location where parents can pick them up. We encourage parents who wish to walk with their children to park at one of the locations (parking space is limited) and join the Walking School Bus. We also encourage students and parents who live close to school to still walk and bike from home on their own, too! The Walk to School Day event helps us promote safer routes for students who walk or bike in our community. We?re also helping to promote physical activity for our students, and helping build connections between our families, schools and community.

May 5 National Day of Prayer Service
The mission of the National Day of Prayer Task Force is to mobilize prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in the culture. The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Our Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America?s leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo-Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible. http://www.nationaldayofprayer.org/national-prayer/

May 22 Harkin Store Program - Minnesota Riverboats
MINNESOTA RIVERBOATS

Riverboats were used as early as 1853 to develop the Minnesota River area,
where the village of West Newton developed.  Alexander Harkin was one of the
first residents but was farming for 14 years before moving into town to start his
general store and grain warehouse.

The 1870's general store has 40 % original merchandise on the shelves.  Come
and see the displays and information about the riverboats that traveled the
Minnesota River.  The West Newton stream ship was one of the first boats on
the river in 1853.  The West Newton docking area was very busy until the boats
stopped.  Come find out WHY!

The Harkin Store is open on Saturdays and Sundays in May from 10 to 5 pm with programs on Sundays from 1 to 4pm.  The programs are included with the
admission to the store.  The gift shop is open the same hours as the store and has
many books, toys, hand crafted and unique items, also 10 cent candy.

The store is located nine miles northwest of New Ulm on Nicollet County Road 21,
or the bottom road, or nine miles east of Fort Ridgely.  For more information contact
the store on week ends at 1-507-354-8666 or Nicollet County Historical Society which
operates the store at 1-507-934-2160.
