Sep 5 Pitchfork Fondue Steak Fry
Great Steak and Great Friends!

The Lind House Association will again be bearing pitchforks in the ‘American Gothic’ style, ready to cook steaks using their own customized fondue vat and ‘secret ingredients’ for the third annual Pitchfork Fondue Steak Fry held on Friday, September 5, from 5 pm to 7:30 pm at  Hermann Heights Park.

When cooking for large groups, the fondue crew keeps a couple four-tine forks busy; each tine holds four steaks at a time. It takes three minutes to reach medium rare once the steaks are plunged beneath the surface in a spit of smoke. You do the math, that’s a lot of steaks! And we assure you, the pitchforks are immaculately clean. In addition to mouth-watering steaks, the menu also features corn on the cob, baked beans, a beverage and Dairy Queen ice cream treats. Take-outs will be available.

Pitchfork fondue is a tradition that originated with the cowboys in the American West. Cowboys had to be out on the range all day and were unable to come in to have a meal. It appears the idea was born to have a pot of oil boiling outside and cowboys could come and cook pieces of meat as they got the opportunity for a break.

Proceeds from this event will be used to fund Lind House maintenance projects. Your support is gratefully appreciated.

Tickets can be purchased at the New Ulm Chamber, Hy-Vee or from any Lind House Board Member.

Sep 5 WINEDOWN for the WEEKEND! - at Morgan Creek Vineyards
WINEDOWN FOR THE WEEKEND AT MORGAN CREEK VINEYARDS
Live Classical and Jazz Piano performances by Ben Marti, Morgan Creek Vineyards' Artist-in-Residence.  Enjoy live music with European style hospitality, wine by the bottle or glass and gourmet wine appetizers from our wood fired oven.
No reservations. First come first seated.

Classically trained pianist, Ben Marti is a native of New Ulm, MN, currently living in Mankato, MN.  Marti has been working at Gustavus Adolphus College, Saint Peter, MN, since 2004 as a professional accompanist assisting in instrumental and vocal studio rehearsal and recital performance for Gustavus students and faculty, music department seminars, and theatre department musicals. He has worked as Loyola High School Musical and choir accompanist since 2007, and serves a number of local schools with accompaniment services.

Ben has performed with the Mankato Symphony under the direction of Ken Freed and performed as a visiting member of the Andy Stein Jazz Band.  He has donned renaissance costume to perform as Young Wolfgangprogram for youth sponsored by the Mankato Symphony. He has performed with the Symphony since 2006.

Marti also performs with several popular regional Jazz bands and manages the ?Ben Marti Jazz Trio.? He was a founding member, lead singer, and accordionist of the group ?Pre-Apocalyptic Junkyard Orchestra? a wildly popular local group, touring and performing an extensive variety of music venues including jazz, gypsy, ethnic, folk, and classic rock.

Ben left New Ulm during his high school years and continued his academics at the Waldkirchen Gymnasium, and piano studies in Jandelsbrunn, Germany. He returned to the U.S. completing his high school career as an honors graduate in 1999 from the Perpich Center for the Arts, Golden Valley, MN.

Marti was accepted as a Jussi Bjorling Music Scholarship recipient at Gustavus Adolphus College, an award he earned  from 1999 to 2003. He was a student of Gustavus Professor, Helen Baumgartner.  During his Bachelor of Arts program he entered the International Exchange Student program in Vienna, Austria, where he studied music and piano for two semesters.

Marti has had several professional recording experiences as accompanist for Ben Westphal - boy soprano, and the McKnight Foundation Grant. Ben is a recent recipient of the ?Emerging Artist? McKnight Grant Awarded by the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council. As recipient of the 2012 ?Emerging Artist? grant, Ben performed, in a public concert, the works of Bach, Hindemith, and Chopin. The Emerging Artist performance served as the occasion for the release of Marti?s first classical CD. The professional recording was done as a part of the project requirements of the McKnight grant.

Marti is a avid collaborator with regional artists, performers, and  poets - participating annually in the Cambria Eisteddfod, as musical director for the Welsh Heritage event sponsored by the Blue Earth County Historical Society,  and Morgan Creek Vineyards.  He currently performs seasonally as Artist-in- Residence at Morgan Creek Vineyards as classical, jazz, and tango pianist, and accompanist for the  Opera ala Carte series - the winery?s monthly street opera performances.

In his leisure time, Ben has become an avid bicyclist - a passion which he acquired while living in Germany and Austria.  He has worked at his family?s winery business as assistant wine-maker, vineyard manager, and has lead the annual harvest crush for the past 9 years.

Sep 13 Mill City Hot Club Performs at The Grand Kabaret!

Mill City Hot Club Performs at The Grand Kabaret Saturday, September 13th @ 8 p.m.

The Mill City Hot Club was started by founding club member and guitarist Dean Harrington. The music is based on the tradition of gypsy jazz, pioneered in the 1920s by the Belgian guitarist Django Reinhardt and French violinist Stephan Grappelli of the famous Quintet of the Hot Club of France.

This style of jazz was popular through the 1920s-1940s, and has seen a resurgence in the US in recent years. The core instrumentation consist of two acoustic gypsy guitars (Selmer/Maccafarri), upright string bass, and violin; but is not limited to this configuration. Sometimes the group includes other instruments that would be common to the style such as accordion, clarinet, and drums. Although the music and instrumentation is based on the original hot club style, the Mill City Hot Club uses this platform as inspiration for other styles of music including modern jazz, Latin jazz, blues, and more. The band performs with both the original hot club acoustic instrumentation, but also in an electric format similar to the swing/jazz bands of the 1950s-1960s. Depending on the venue, you’ll hear the Mill City Hot Club performing in configurations from a quintet to a duet, with the original acoustic instrumentation or with a more modern electric sound. All of the club members are professional musicians from the twin cities metro area who are regular performing musicians locally and nationally. The variability of club members means the lineup of musicians can change at any particular event. Jazz has always been about the spirit of improvisation and the music is the most exciting when musicians are able to stretch. All of the musicians in Mill City Hot Club are seasoned pros and skilled improvisers.

Sep 26 The Porchlights Perform at The Grand!

The Porchlights will be Performing at The Grand Kabaret Friday, September 26th @ 8 P.M.

The Porchlights were founded at the bend of the Minnesota River near Mankato. They play half original music and half altered cover songs in the style of vocally-driven acoustic rock and blues. They are in favor of river forging, moonlit walks about town, intricate discussion, fine ales and wines, the occasional tumbler o’ whiskey, spermaceti candles, free range poultry, well-trained dogs, tall boots, short lectures, higher learnin’, lower ebbing, the Renaissance, and Rivers Cuomo. They don't care for bullshit. Their founding members are Nate LeBoutillier, Mandy Robbins, Jason Miller, and Travis Friedrichs.
