Jan 2 Northern Darling Performs at The Grand Kabaret!
Friday, January 2nd at 7:30 PM Northern Darling Performs at The Grand Kabaret!

With well-crafted and creative originals and some fun covers, Northern Darling has been described as a pure as honey, hipster version of Billie Holiday. Liz Davis’ vocals are complemented by the unique sound of Trent Jacobs playing an amplified bassoon, James Mouritsen, guitar; Jeff Sugerman, upright bass; and Adam Mickelson on drums.

The band launched in June, 2013 with a self-titled EP of original songs and is excited to be making their first appearance at The Grand Kabaret.

Jan 3 Timbre Junction Returns to The Grand Kabaret!
Saturday, January 3rd at 7:30 PM Timbre Junction Returns to The Grand Kabaret!

Timbre Junction has been together for about twelve years now and have been working hard to develop their own unique sound. For them this has meant becoming familiar with each members own style both personal and musical, on stage and off. The group consists of four members: Mike Regouski on banjo and dobro, Stan Chew on guitar, mandolin and vocals, Amy Ferman on fiddle and vocals, and Karen Radford on upright bass and vocals. Although the instrumentation is bluegrass, Timbre Junction likes to mix it up with a variety of bluegrass, old time, classic country, and folk.

Jan 10 Minnesota Barking Ducks Perform at the Grand Kabaret!
Saturday, January 10th @ 7:30 PM the Minnesota Barking Ducks Perform at the Grand Kabaret!

For over 30 years the Fabulous Minnesota Barking Ducks have brought a driving, diverse, blues-based music to the Twin Cities and all points between. Two members of the band have enjoyed the trip for the entire time: David "Burnie" Benson has steady laid down his distinctive, back-of-the-beat feel on drums; and Mic McCormick has forever silenced crowds with his phenomenal, oh-so-tasty guitar. Mic tells stories with that thing, and most people listen.

The "new" members have been Ducks for a little less than a decade. Ed Dunn plays bass and sings. Ed is intense, and plays deep in the pocket with Burnie, the two of them laying down a regular roadmap. Kit Kildahl sings and plays guitar and occasional harp. Kit has known Mic and Burnie since '75, when he was playing with the Dust Bowl Blues Band and Ace in the Whole.

These guys have a lot of music to draw on, so the result is a wide-ranging songlist--blues of course; but also rock, R & B, and jazz standards like "Fly Me to the Moon".

Jan 13 Alice Lind Play Reading Society

January 13: Our Town by Thornton Wilder

Plays are selected with the criteria that they are great pieces of literature and contain universal truths and/or significant themes. Many of the selections have won Tony Awards or Pulitzer prizes for literature. Suggestions are always welcome for the following season.

Volunteers will be asked to read parts throughout the evening. Depending on attendance, the leading roles may be read by several people for each act or scene. Persons attending do not have to read or may request smaller roles to read. Suggestions from the public for future plays are strongly encouraged. Contact Paul Warshauer at (507) 359-9990.

The Society meets on the Second Tuesday of each month and is dedicated to the idea that reading and listening to plays allows the participants to understand the words and themes of the author more clearly than in some performances. The series is named after the former Governor’s wife, Alice Lind, a supporter of social causes and literacy.  To make reservations, please leave a name and phone number on the voice mail at the NUACT office phone (507) 359-9990 along with how many will be in your party.  For more information about the play reading options contact Paul Warshauer (507) 359-9990. For more information about the Lind House, please contact Trudy Beranek at (507) 354-8802.  If you would like to be on the monthly mailing list, please email us at execdir@newulmact.com

Jan 15 HYPE January Luncheon Meeting
The New Ulm Area Young Professionals are kicking off the new year with our January HYPE luncheon meeting! The meeting will NOT be held at the New Ulm Country Club this month. It will instead be held at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, where our own HYPE member, Eric Warmka, will be giving us a presentation and a tour! Minnesota Valley Funeral Home has also kindly volunteered to cater and pay for a lunch for our group. We are grateful for this wonderful opportunity to learn more about the important services that Minnesota Valley Funeral Home brings to our community.

***The funeral home will need a headcount for ordering lunch, so we ask that you please RSVP by 12:00 pm noon on Monday, January 12, 2015.
***We are attempting to fit a lot into a one-hour time slot, and we want to be mindful of everyone's workday schedules. We ask that you do your best to arrive at the funeral home promptly at 12:00 pm noon on Thursday.
***In the event that a funeral will be held at the South Chapel on the day of our meeting, we will communicate alternate plans to you. Please watch your email for any updates!
***Our HYPE luncheon meetings will resume at the usual location, the New Ulm Country Club, in February.

Jan 17 Charmin Michelle Performs with Jim Maguire & Rick Orpen at the Grand Kabaret!
Saturday, January 17th @ 7:30 PM Charmin Michelle Performs with Jim Maguire & Rick Orpen at the Grand Kabaret!

"Taste and understatement. Swing and savoir-faire. Grace and grooves. Intimacy and panache. Singer Charmin Michelle delivers all of the above and more."

This is what the Minneapolis Star/Tribune had to say about this charismatic chanteuse whose conversational style recalls the late Billie Holiday and other legendary ladies of jazz. And, yet, her music is free of tiresome camp and easy nostalgia. She's a savvy songstress and, while putting her own imprint on a melody, is always respectful of those who first inhabited it.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Charmin moved to Minnesota while still a child and has called it home ever since. Though based in Minneapolis, she is no stranger to life on the road and began touring internationally in 1986. She has performed at jazz festivals throughout Europe with pianists Mulgrew Miller and Kirk Lightsey, and saxophonists Harry Allen and Grant Stewart, among others. The late Brother Jack McDuff, one of her biggest fans, was instrumental in launching her career abroad. He said, "She's really different. I call her 'Chow Mein.' With her trio, less is more. And they're right in the pocket."

On her last tour to Spain, she recorded with the aforementioned Allen and Stewart, as well as saxophonist Scott Hamilton, guitarist Peter Bernstein, and Barcelonan musicians Ignasi Terraza, and the Toni Sola Quartet.

Her four acclaimed CDs---Your Eyes, Destination Moon, Hot, and Pure Imagination---have received glowing reviews and are available at performances, retailers, and online at www.charmsongs.com.

Jan 20 Minnesota Valley Civil War Round Table
Join us at the Minnesota Valley Civil War Round Table Tuesday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m. for a pictorial look at the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Local historian Dave Martinka has selected from his personal collection of more than 200 pictures of Dakota War markers and memorials this presentation that traces the war from Acton to Rochester. While most of us are familiar with the war in 1862 and 1863, actions continued into 1865. Mr. Martinka has not only collected photographs but many stories behind the markers. This is an interactive program, so he has asked that if you have stories or knowledge of other markers in the area that you share them. All round table meetings are free and open to the public. The Minnesota Civil War Round Table is sponsored in part by a grant from the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Saturday, January 31st @ 7:30 PM Jack Klatt Performs at the Grand Kabaret!

Jack Klatt is a singer, a songwriter, a seasoned traveler, and a dexterous finger-style guitarist. Combining musical traditions from hokum blues to the roots of country music, he has been criss-crossing the lower 48, spreading his brand of American music.

In 2009 Klatt settled down in Minneapolis, formed a band and founded the Cat Swingers. Soon enough he found himself performing around 100-150 nights a year perfecting his crafts of performance and songwriting. In 2011 Klatt received a Minnesota State Arts Grant to record a collaborative album with a number of veteran Minnesota legends including Spider John Koerner, Dakota Dave Hull, Cornbread Harris and Charlie Parr. Mississippi Roll has since garnered praise all the way from California to the UK. With a solo album, "Love Me Lonely" under his belt you can expect to see him on the road, with or without his band, rollin' through a town near you.
