Apr 2    Pirates: Separating Fact from Fiction Virtual Program
Welcome to CAST Virtual Programs! Provided by the CAST Senior Center, this programming was developed to reach a wide audience of senior citizens, providing an endless variety of interesting subjects via virtual programming. Our Virtual Programs take us across the country, experiencing and learning about places and people which we wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to experience. Scheduled every Tuesday afternoon, unless noted, at 1pm at the CAST Senior Center, our Virtual Programs are free and open to the public. There are no membership dues and everyone is welcome to attend. Programming is provided by the Senior Learning Network, AARP One Day University, and other online providers. Check out our virtual program schedule every month and join us! We look forward to seeing you! Overview: The so-called Golden Age of piracy was a time of heightened piratical activity in the Atlantic Ocean between 1650 and 1730. Infamous pirates like Black Sam Bellamy, Captain Kidd, Anne Bonny and Blackbeard operated in and around the port cities of the colonial Atlantic world, ports which were crucial to regional and global economies. This truly unique and unusual class will take you back to learn more about these outlaws of the sea, including the dangerous lives they led, their motivations to enter a world of intrigue, and the treasures they plundered. What enabled pirates to flourish for nearly a century and what led to their decline? This lecture will upend what you thought you knew about this Golden Age of piracy. Who they were, who were they secretly working for, and how  they become “Disney-fied.” Did they really have peg legs and eye patches, bury their treasure, and force their victims to walk the plank? Climb aboard and find out for yourself!

Apr 9    "Three Musical Masterpieces Every Music Lover Should Listen To" CAST Virtual Program
Provided by the CAST Senior Center, our Virtual Programs provide an endless variety of interesting subjects. Programming is provided by CuriousityU.com and other online providers. Check out our virtual program schedule every month and join us! We look forward to seeing you! There are works from the great composers who speak to us with the freshness and excitement of anything seemingly more contemporary and relevant. As long as we bring an open mind, or open ears, we can discover beauty, meaning, and emotional depth undimmed by the passage of time. In this class, Professor Grossman will present three remarkable musical works from the same period, by musicians young and old, at the peak of their composing careers. All three share energy and passion of youth, and the excitement of ushering in or extending a new musical era. And yet these compositions could not be more different than if they had been written hundreds of years apart. Individually, they each speak to us about the power of musical expression; together they illustrate how many ways music can excite the imagination. The three compositions are: 1) Ludwig van Beethoven, Fifth Symphony, 2) Frederic Chopin, Ballade #1 for Piano, and 3) Professor Grossman’s acclaimed finale (which he has performed all around the world!) George Gershwin, Rhapsody in Blue.

Apr 12    State Street Theater Presents: Who Dunit...and to Whom
Enjoy this hilarious spoof of the classic noir detective story with more twists than a piece of “Twizzler” licorice. Henpecked rug salesman Harold Finnegan is trying to pound out his umteenth third rate detective story. As he writes, the action is played out on the stage by his characters or “thought forms” who must replay any part he revises again and again. The revisions do not mean the action has improved much to the chagrin of the thought forms. Will they mutiny? Who will actually be writing the play?

Apr 12    Tony Cuchetti - Live Music in the Kabaret
Like sages of old, calling down their muse from the mountains, Tony Cuchetti derives his spirit and creativity from an eclectic blend of folk, blues, country and americana. Compared to the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Sturgill Simpson, Amos Lee, and Ray Lamontagne, Tony Cuchetti bleeds soul. We look forward to seeing you! In April 1912, White Star Line’s new transatlantic liner Titanic entered service as the second of three Olympic class steamers. The largest ship in the world and the largest moving object yet built by man, she set sail from Southampton bound for New York, but mid-Atlantic she collided with an iceberg and sank with great loss of life. Thus, the legend and fascination that is Titanic began. And it’s clear that even today, after more than 100 years, interest in the ship and her tragic demise is as strong as ever. As with all such disasters, there were numerous events that led up to the final act–some of which may well have played out differently and could have altered the course of history. Was the ship badly designed or poorly constructed? Was she negligently navigated? And what actually happened that cold April night? In this illustrated presentation, naval architect Stephen Payne –designer of today’s only remaining transatlantic liner, Queen Mary 2–assesses the facts and dispels the myths about this famous ship and her enduring legacy.

Apr 19    CAST Movie Matinees: "The Man Who Came to Dinner" (1941)
The CAST Senior Center is partnering with the New Ulm Public Library to bring you Movie Matinees for Seniors. Held in the Meeting Room in the lower level of the New Ulm Public Library, we will present a different movie each Friday afternoon at 1pm. These movies are free, and everyone is welcome to attend. No preregistration needed. Made possible by the Optimist Club of New Ulm. For 2024, our monthly movie theme is “Through the Decades”. We will be showing movies from the Top 100 Movies list of their decade, beginning with the 1930s in March and ending with the 2020s in December. See some old favorites and maybe discover some new ones. Join us for a fun afternoon of classic cinema! The Man Who Came to Dinner is a 1942 American screwball comedy film directed by William Keighley,[3][4] and starring Bette Davis, Ann Sheridan and, as the titular character, Monty Woolley. The screenplay by Julius and Philip G. Epstein is based on the 1939 play The Man Who Came to Dinner by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. The supporting cast features Jimmy Durante and Billie Burke. While passing through small-town Ohio during a cross-country lecture tour, notoriously acerbic New York radio personality Sheridan Whiteside breaks his hip after slipping and falling on the icy steps of the house of the Stanleys, a prominent Ohio family with whom he's supposed to dine as a publicity stunt. He insists on recuperating in their home during the Christmas holidays. The overbearing, self-centered celebrity soon comes to dominate the lives of the residents and everyone else who enters the household, including a shipment of four live penguins. He encourages young adults Richard and June Stanley to pursue their dreams, much to the dismay of their conventional father, Ernest.

Apr 23    "President Ike: The Legend of Dwight D. Eisenhower" CAST Virtual Program
Provided by the CAST Senior Center, our Virtual Programs provide an endless variety of interesting subjects. Programming is provided by CuriousityU.com and other online providers. Check out our virtual program schedule every month and join us! We look forward to seeing you! In 2017, the influential C-Span ranking of U.S. presidents carried some surprising news: in the opinion of the hundreds of historians that were polled, Dwight D. Eisenhower now ranked as our fifth best president, right next to Lincoln, Washington, Franklin, and Theodore Roosevelt. Ike? Fifth best? For decades, Eisenhower’s presidency had been underrated. Long considered a do-nothing, lazy president who played a lot of golf and presided over the boom years of the 1950s, scholars of the presidency had written off Eisenhower as a mediocrity. But something has happened to the 34th president’s reputation: when the 2021 C-Span ranking was published, Eisenhower remained in fifth place, among the very greatest chief executives. What explains this significant change in how we see Dwight Eisenhower? Partly, it has to do with his moderation: in our polarized era, a moderate Republican president now seems attractive. Partly, it has to do with his reputation for public service and integrity: he gave his entire life to public service as an Army officer, a university leader, and president. But it also has to do with the real results he achieved in office: he wound down the Korean War, avoided other conflicts, affirmed the New Deal, fought the demagoguery of Joe McCarthy, and advanced civil rights for African Americans. He also warned us of the dangers of the “military-industrial complex.” This lecture will assess Ike’s legacy and the example he offers for today.

Apr 25    Calling All Graduating Seniors (And Parents, Too) for Healthcare Directive NIght

As spring and the last few months of high school are approaching for graduating seniors, many are probably making choices for what they’ll do next. Will they start working right away? Will they join the military? Will they pick a trade school to attend nearby? Will they travel abroad? Will they move to a far-away college?

Have you as the graduating senior or the parent of a graduating senior thought about the extra-important topic of healthcare directives and power of attorneys? Likely not. Nor is it something we want to think about. But, should a worst-case scenario happen, parents or guardians will need to be able to access their young adult child’s information or they may need someone to make a medical decision for them.

Many of our attorneys have helped their graduating children put these documents in place before they head out into the world. It’s also a common topic discussed on college “parent pages”. Thus, we wanted to bring your attention to it, as well.

Join us for any of the following Healthcare Directive Nights where a healthcare directive and power of attorney can be completed within a few minutes. Attorneys will be available to answer any brief questions and to complete your documents. The student will need their photo ID, name, date of birth and address, along with the name, phone number and address of the person they are naming. Each healthcare directive or power of attorney will be done for a one-time fee of $75 or $125 for both.

Register below!

April 23rd – Blethen Berens, 100 Warren Street, Suite 400, Mankato
April 25th – Blethen Berens, 219 N Broadway Suite C, New Ulm
April 30th – St. Peter Community Center, 601 S Washington St, St. Peter (Door B, Room 217)

Please note, attending and completing your healthcare directive and/or power of attorney at any of these Healthcare Directive Nights will not establish an attorney-client relationship beyond the preparation of these documents.

Apr 26    CAST Movie Matinees: "Arsenic and Old Lace" (1944)
Arsenic and Old Lace is a 1944 American screwball mystery black comedy film directed by Frank Capra and starring Cary Grant. The screenplay by Julius J. Epstein and Philip G. Epstein is based on Joseph Kesselring's 1941 play of the same name. The contract with the play's producers stipulated that the film would not be released until the Broadway run ended. The original planned release date was September 30, 1942. The play was hugely successful, running for three and a half years, so the film was not released until 1944. The film is recognized by American Film Institute in AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs (#30) in 2000.

We look forward to seeing you! Weather and climate have been shaping human history for thousands of years. Blizzards, hurricanes, droughts, dust storms, and floods: all of them have been turning points. Weather disasters seem so much bigger than we are, but they're accurate barometers for telling us about what we value as human beings. This course will examine some of these major turning points (some of them based on controversial evidence!), from the ancient world, to Napoleon's invasion of Russia, to the Dust Bowl, to Hurricane Katrina. How have weather disasters shaped human history, and what can this tell us about how we think about climate change today?
