Aug 6 BCHS Book Group
The Brown County Historical Society History Book Club will meet on Wednesday, August 6 at 7 pm at the Museum Annex in New Ulm. CONFLICTED MISSION: FAITH, DISPUTES, AND DECEPTION ON THE DAKOTA FRONTIER by Linda Clemmons is the book selection scheduled for the August 6 meeting. Recently released by the Minnesota Historical Society, it focuses on the cultural collision between the Dakota Indians and the missionaries sent to convert them from the 1830s to the 1860s. CAPTIVE HISTORIES: ENGLISH, FRENCH, AND NATIVE NARRATIVES OF THE 1704 DEERFIELD RAID, edited by Evan Haefeli and Kevin Sweeney, is the September 3 pick. The book draws together a rich body of original sources to tell the story of the 1704 French and Indian attack on Deerfield, Mass. Texts range from one of the most famous early American captivity narratives, John Williams?s The Redeemed Captive, to the records of French soldiers and clerics, to little-known Abenaki and Mohawk stories of the raid that emerged out of their communities' oral traditions. Both books can be borrowed from the New Ulm Public Library, 507-359-8332. The BCHS History Book Club is free and open to the public; call 507-233-2616 for more information.

Aug 16 Mankato Mud Run 2014
2014 Mankato Mud Run The 4th Annual Mankato Mud Run will be the most challenging mud and obstacle course yet! We have lots of new obstacles and plans! Choose the 3K or 5K course. The Mankato Mud Run is the only family friendly mud run that we know of! It is made for adults, kids, families and teams! The race has a difficult 5k for extreme racers, but also family friendly races and kids races. The Mankato Mud Run will take place on Loyola Hill in Mankato Minnesota on August 16th 2014. For 2014, the Mankato Mud Run will have 3 Mud Pits (or more!), a crazy creek run with tunnel, 2 long steep hills, a climbing wall, climbing nets, and many other new, fun obstacles! There is a challenging 5k race (3.1 Miles) as well as a more friendly 3k course (1.6 miles with only 1 hill) so that everyone can participate. While many race, walking is also permitted. There is a Costume Contest too! The Mankato Mud run also has competitive races with prize money and trophies. All 5K races will be timed. The 3K is not timed. All Entrants receive Race Shirts, Goodie Bags, and Finisher Medals. Race proceeds go to local charities. Course Info: Kids Races: There are Kids Races for the 3k and the 5k. Parents are allowed to go free with their children if they want, as chaperones. Parents who do this don't get tshirts, medals or goodie bags though. The kids race goes first, so parents can go with their children in this race, and then race in the adult races later. Team and Company Races: There are Team and Company Races at 3k and 5k distances, with awards at the 5K distance. Team may consist of 3 - 16 members.
