Apr 12 History Presentations at Library
The Brown County Historical Society and New Ulm Public Library will host two history scholars on Saturday, April 12 at New Ulm Public Library. At 10 a.m., Dr. Elden Lawrence will introduce is latest book, "Stepping Off the Keel Boat: An Inside Look at the Dakota War of 1862." Dr. Lawrence is President Emeritus at Sisseton Wahpeton College. He is the author of "The Peace Seekers: Indian Christians and the Dakota Conflict" and "Stories and Reflections: From an Indian Perspective." At 1 p.m., Dr. H. Glenn Penny, Associate Professor of History at the University of Iowa, will discuss his new book, "Kindred By Choice: Germans and American Indians Since 1800." The book explores the striking sense of affinity for American Indians that has permeated German culture for two centuries. It shows how those affinities stem from German polycentrism, notions of tribalism, a devotion to resistance, a longing for freedom, and a melancholy sense of shared fate. Q&A sessions and book signings will follow each event. Books will be available for purchase. Call 507-359-8334 for more information.

Apr 12 Jazz @ The Grand - ROBERT BELL & ANDRIANA LEHR
Andriana Lehr and Robert Bell deliver a contemporary twist on jazz standards, and a jazz twist on contemporary classics. Singer-Songwriter Andriana Lehr carries song in her spirit, and has been dabbling in music from an early age. Growing up in South Dakota, she performed regularly throughout her youth singing and playing piano, guitar, and viola, pleasing local crowds at weddings and community events either solo or with three orchestra mates in a string quartet. Robert Bell is one of the most in-demand jazz guitarists in the area. His passion for music is evident in his playing, and he is well versed in several styles.

Apr 24 I-35 Bridge Collapse Survivor Sharing His Story
Author Garrett Ebling will share his amazing story of survival after the I-35W Bridge collapse on Thursday, April 24 at 2 p.m. at Orchard Hill Assisted Living and at 6 p.m. at New Ulm Public Library. Ebling's story is chronicled in "Collapsed: A Survivor's Climb From the Wreckage of the I-35W Bridge." When his car took a hundred-foot nosedive, former journalist Ebling was left with brain trauma, many broken bones, and a shattered face. Though he made a miraculous physical recovery, his relationships and emotional stability disintegrated. He clung to hope, and slowly but surely, he pulled himself back from the brink of despair, and discovered a new spirit: the spirit of a fighter. Books will be available for purchase. Apr 25 ERIK KOSKINEN BAND @ The Grand
Erik Koskinen's America Theatre is a translucent eulogy to the genuine. Musically sprouted from the blend of American folk, country, rock-n-roll, and blues, Koskinen and his top-shelf band realize a sound that is distinctive and fresh while familiar and classic. From the tender opener, "First Time in Years" to the defiant "Six Pack of Beer" to "Boomtown," a track that flays the history of the west's settlement from bedrock to fracking with a locomotive's force of barbwire guitars, marching bass and cracking drums, Koskinen moves the listener through a landscape of personal and social struggles, as well as small triumphs, of our nation and its people. Ending on the quiet heartbreaker and breath taker, "Slow Burn," Koskinen's album is a lyrical and musical metaphor of American's theaters of war, of history, of relationships, and of the reflections in the mirror. Knowing but not didactic, Koskinen channels the ways of Whitman and reverently enters the anthology of uniquely crafted wry songs with the likes of Woody Guthrie and Ry Cooder while speaking as plainly as your neighbor. Koskinen joins the ranks of chief musicians and sharp wordsmiths.
