Mar 2 Hot Topics Lunch
The New Ulm Medical Center recently released a Community Health Needs Assessment and Improvement Plan for 2017-2019.  This Community Health Improvement Plan is the result of a community-wide effort in 2016 to identify and prioritize the most pressing health issues facing our community. The Plan includes actions that will be taken over the next three years by many different organizations, including Heart of New Ulm and New Ulm Medical Center, to improve different health measures in our area. The Hot Topics lunch will share the community’s most pressing health issues and a discussion on the strategies and action plan to address them.

According to Ben Winchester, Research Fellow at the U of M’s Extension Center for Community Vitality, “Quality of Life” is the selling point for communities like New Ulm.  Community health and access to health related services significantly impacts “Quality of Life”.  New Ulm Medical Center, part of Allina Health, is one of New Ulm’s largest employers and a very active leading organization in the New Ulm area.

Mar 8 - Mar 9 AARP Smart Driver Safety Course 8 Hour Course
Why take a driver safety course? Because driving has changed since you first got your license, and doing so could save you money! Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel every day. Some drivers 55+ have never looked back since they got their first driver’s license, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you will learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You will learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. In addition, you will learn how to minimize the effects of dangerous blind spots; how to maintain the proper following distance behind another car; the safest ways to change lanes and make turns at busy intersections; proper use of safety belts, air bags, antilock brakes and new technology found in cars today; ways to monitor your own and others’ driving skills and capabilities; the effects of medications on driving; the importance of eliminating distractions such as eating, smoking and using cell phones. No tests to take! You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course. Consult your insurance agent for details. AARP membership is not required to take the course.

Mar 11 Irish Tea and Luncheon
The Irish Cultural Society of New Ulm will host it's annual IRISH TEA AND LUNCHEON on Saturday, March 11 at noon at the Best Western Plus Gallery Ballroom. Irish craic and song will be performed by the Irish 'Red' Rovers. Created by the former Mayor of New Ulm, Carl 'Red' Wyczawski, the local group honors the major role Irish immigrants played in founding the city of New Ulm. “I feel so incredibly privileged and humbled to be welcomed as token Irish. The city has benefited from their hard work, determination, integrity and tremendous talent for many generations. It was only fitting that we celebrate their identity with the formation of a performance group much like the Concord Singers," stated Wyczawski.  The luncheon menu includes Irish potato and leek soup, apple, spinach and baby kale salad with apple cider vinaigrette, and chocolate cake with Bailey's buttercream frosting. Tickets are $12.50. Please RSVP by March 9 by calling Mary O'Connor at 354-2427, email nublarney@gmail.com or register online at NewUlmBlarney.com. The Irish Cultural Society of New Ulm events encourage friendship, loyalty and kinship among those people of New Ulm and the surrounding area who are interested in Irish culture, traditions and history. Partial funding and support was received from Ground Zero Services and the Gislason & Hunter Law Firm.

Mar 21 Mother Courage and Her Children

The Alice Lind Play Reading Society will read Mother Courage and Her Children by Bertolt Brecht on March 21 at 7 pm at the John Lind House, located at 622 Center Street, New Ulm.

During the Thirty Years War, Mother Courage, tries to balance business and the needs of her family. The dilemmas she faces, and the choices she makes, lead to startling and heart-breaking results. Mother Courage and Her Children is Brecht’s always timely elegy on war, family, and the indomitable struggle of the human will. As translated by Tony Kushner, it continues to be a masterpiece for the twenty-first century.

Hanska native and retired English teacher, Gene Brand, will lead the Play Reading. Volunteers are asked to read parts throughout the evening. Roles may be read by several people for each act or scene. Persons attending do not have to read or may request smaller roles to read. Suggestions from the public for future plays are strongly encouraged. Attendance is FREE.

The Society is dedicated to the idea that reading and listening to plays allows the participants to understand the words and themes of the author more clearly than in some performances. The series is named after the former Governor’s wife, Alice Lind, a supporter of social causes and literacy.

To make reservations, contact Gene, State Street Theater Company, at (507) 226-3123. For more information about the Lind House Association, call Trudy at (507) 354-8802.  If you would like to be on the monthly mailing list, please email us at statestreettheater@gmail.com.

Mar 24 The Odd Couple

Two bachelors, one apartment, a great evening of fun!

The State Street Theater Company presents the iconic American comedy THE ODD COUPLE directed by Michael Koester and written by Tony award-winning Neil Simon. Performances run Friday and Saturday, March 24 - 25 at 7:30 pm with a 2 pm matinee on Sunday March 26.

After their thoroughly fed up wives throw them out, Felix Ungar, an uptight neat freak newswriter moves in with his friend, sloppy sportswriter Oscar Madison. Despite Oscar’s problems – careless spending, excessive gambling, a poorly kept house filled with spoiled food – he seems to enjoy life.

Felix, however, seems utterly incapable of enjoying anything and only finds purpose in pointing out his own and other people’s mistakes and foibles. Even when he tries to do so in a gentle and constructive way, his corrections and suggestions prove extremely annoying to those around him.

Throughout a series of hilarious interchanges, these mismatched roommates teach each other about life, love and the meaning of friendship. Filled with witty dialogue and hilarious one-liners, THE ODD COUPLE remains one of Neil Simon’s most recognizable works and one of the greatest stage comedies ever written.

General admission seating is $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce, online, or by calling 507-359-9990. State Street Theater is located at 1 North State Street, New Ulm. For more information email statestreettheater@gmail.com or visit statestreetnewulm.org.

State Street Theater Company’s production of THE ODD COUPLE is produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Additional funding has been received by Pat and Nikki Eckstein and Gag Sheet Metal, Inc.

Mar 26 Spring Gala Fundraiser
The New Ulm Suzuki School of Music will host their annual Spring Gala on Sunday, March 26 at Lola - An American Bistro from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The gala will feature live musical entertainment, a pasta tasting, Morgan Creek Vineyard wines and a silent auction. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Music will be provided by the Allegro Strings, a classical string ensemble, and performances by the Suzuki school's advanced piano students. The event is a fundraiser for the school to support its student scholarship program and additional enrichment programming including our annual Suzuki workshops and other outside music enrichment opportunities. Qualified students use the scholarships to enhance their private Suzuki lessons by participating in a Suzuki Institute or our Pops Camp. The institute program provides an immersive musical experience with dynamic, nationally recognized Suzuki faculty while striving to edify the character of students, teachers and families. Our Pops Camp provides an opportunity for players at many levels and different instruments to gain experience playing in a large ensemble setting. For more information and to order gala tickets online or by telephone, visit www.newulmsuzuki.org, call 507-276-3928 or email contact@newulmsuzuki.org.
