Feb 20 League of Women Voters, Library to Host Book Discussion
The public is invited to an Energy Awareness Book Discussion hosted by the New Ulm League of Women Voters and New Ulm Public Library on Monday, February 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the library, 17 N. Broadway. League member Linda Heine, President of the New Ulm Public Utilities Commission, will facilitate the discussion, which will focus on the book “The Grid: The Fraying Wires Between Americans and Our Energy Future” by Gretchen Bakke, Ph.D. About the book, from the publisher: “Cultural anthropologist Gretchen Bakke unveils the many facets of America's energy infrastructure, its most dynamic moments and its most stable ones, and its essential role in personal and national life. The grid, she argues, is an essentially American artifact, one that developed with us: a product of bold expansion, the occasional foolhardy vision, some genius technologies, and constant improvisation. Most of all, her focus is on how Americans are changing the grid right now, sometimes with gumption and big dreams and sometimes with legislation or the brandishing of guns.” Contact the library at 507-359-8332 to place a hold on a book or for more information.

Feb 28 AARP Smart Driver Safety Course 4-hour refresher course
Why take a driver safety course? Because driving has changed since you first got your license, and doing so could save you money! Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel every day. Some drivers 55+ have never looked back since they got their first driver’s license, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you will learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You will learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. In addition, you will learn how to minimize the effects of dangerous blind spots; how to maintain the proper following distance behind another car; the safest ways to change lanes and make turns at busy intersections; proper use of safety belts, air bags, antilock brakes and new technology found in cars today; ways to monitor your own and others’ driving skills and capabilities; the effects of medications on driving; the importance of eliminating distractions such as eating, smoking and using cell phones. No tests to take! You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course. Consult your insurance agent for details. AARP membership is not required to take the course.
