Minnesota Valley Civil War Round Table
Independent historian Bryce Stenzel will discuss the Battle of Nashville at the Minnesota Valley Civil War Round Table program Tuesday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. at New Ulm Public Library. The December 15-16, 1864, Battle of Nashville was one of the most decisive but underrated campaigns of the entire American Civil War. It resulted in the utter destruction of the Confederacy?s Army of the Tennessee, under the command of General John Bell Hood. Six of Minnesota?s 11 infantry regiments were stationed in and around Nashville just before or during the battle. Several soldiers with ties to the Mankato area and who are immortalized on the Boy in Blue Soldiers Monument took part in the battle, including Lorin Cray of the Ninth Minnesota and Colonel James Baker of the Tenth Minnesota. Stenzel is the great-great grandson of Wilhelm Urban, a Fifth Minnesota regimental soldier who fought at Nashville. This event is made possible by a grant provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative and was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
