In recognition of Women's History Month, Dr. Joachim Reppmann will discuss German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday, March 26 at 6 p.m. at New Ulm Public Library. Merkel, chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union and a trained Ph.D. physicist, grew up behind the Iron Curtain in Communist East Germany as a daughter of a Lutheran pastor. Dr. Reppmann will speak about Merkel's rise to power, from her start when Ronald Reagan spoke next to the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin the immortal words "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" to the present-day problems she faces with Russia. Dr. Reppmann is Executive Director of the Stoltenberg Institute and has taught at Carleton and St. Olaf colleges. This program is made possible by a grant provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative and was funded with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
