CAST Movie Matinee: "Oppenheimer"
Oppenheimer chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a renowned theoretical physicist who played a pivotal role in the development of the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project during World War II. The story takes us from his student days in Europe to his time as a professor in California in the 1930s and then to the Manhattan Project. As America's isolation from World War II ends, prominent American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer finds himself tasked with performing a miracle. Driven by fear, with the Germans having an overwhelming head start on the race to develop the atomic bomb, the Allies begin the ambitious Manhattan Project. With Oppenheimer at the helm, the Los Alamos Laboratory spearheads a top-secret government endeavor to weaponize theory before the Nazis do. However, nothing can prepare the world for the outcome of the greatest scientific gamble in history: a closely guarded, multibillion-dollar military program to end all war. After all, no one can be trusted with such a devastating weapon of mass destruction--not even geniuses. The CAST Senior Center is partnering with the New Ulm Public Library to bring you Movie Matinees for Seniors. Held in the Meeting Room in the lower level of the New Ulm Public Library, we will present a different movie each Friday afternoon at 1pm. These movies are free, and everyone is welcome to attend. No preregistration needed. Made possible by the Optimist Club of New Ulm. For 2024, our monthly movie theme is “Through the Decades”. We will be showing movies from the Top 100 Movies list of their decade, beginning with the 1930s in March and ending with the 2020s in December. See some old favorites and maybe discover some new ones. Join us for a fun afternoon of classic cinema!
